Hockey Legend Helps WWS, Cardinal IG Celebrate Year Anniversary of Working Together

Celebrating the one-year anniversary of the partnership between Western Window Systems and Cardinal IG was cool. Doing it in the presence of a hockey legend was nothing short of thrilling.

Hall-of-Famer Dave Christian, a member of the U.S. "Miracle on Ice" team that upset the Russians in the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, New York, and one of just a handful of players to compete in over 1,000 NHL games, was on hand for the party, which took place at WWS HQ.

Christian, who currently works as co-director of leadership development at Eden Prairie, Minnesota-based Cardinal IG, brought his gold medal with him, agreeing to pose for photos with it and dozens of WWS employees. Joining Christian from Cardinal IG were President Dave Pinder, VP Bowie Neumayer, Clayton Watson, plant manager at Cardinal IG’s Buckeye, Arizona facility, and Kurt Peck, sales manager at Cardinal IG Buckeye.

“It was a real pleasure to have the Cardinal team out to our home office to celebrate our year of doing business with them,” says Cameron Wyatt, vice president of design and supply chain. “Everyone had a great time.”

Of course, the Western Window Systems’ team wasn’t going to let Christian out of the building without showing off his hockey skills against one of our own, Minnesota-born maintenance manager Arlen Nagle. The two actually grew up near each other and competed against one another as high school hockey players.

Given that the party was in August and ice is hard to come by in Phoenix this time of year, Nagle and Christian had to settle for a game of bubble hockey, one of the more popular arcade games in the building.

Senior graphic designer Annie Leung even took one of the tiny bubble hockey players and painstakingly painted it to replicate his 1980 U.S. team jersey. She also painted “Christian Brothers” on the bubble player’s hockey stick, a reference to Dave’s dad and uncle, Bill and Roger, respectively, both members of the 1960 U.S. hockey team.

As a token of appreciation for their stellar glass-making efforts, Western Window Systems presented the Cardinal IG contingent with two custom cornhole games and received from them a framed autographed photo of the U.S. team in action.

And before it was all said and done, Christian autographed the rink of the bubble hockey game.
